Inferno Bounds operator

The Inferno Bounds operator allows you to control the expansion of sparse cubes in an Inferno simulation.

Without any bounds operators in a flow, the Inferno simulation will expand its sparse grid freely in all directions, consuming VRAM wherever there is active fluid. Adding an Inferno Bounds operator is one of the most effective ways to keep VRAM usage under control - by constraining the simulation to only the areas of the scene that will actually be visible to the camera, you can simulate at a higher voxel count for the same VRAM budget.

Inferno Bounds Rollout

Mode

  • Mode: controls what the bounds operator affects.

Bound solver expansion: the bounds will constrain where sparse cubes are permitted to expand during simulation.

Bound cache recall: the bounds will constrain which regions of a cached simulation are recalled and loaded back into VRAM by an Inferno Recall operator.

Include Bounds

  • Include bounds list: the list of tyIcon box objects or camera objects whose volumes define regions where sparse cube expansion is permitted.

Clicking Create new will automatically create and add a new tyIcon box object to the include bounds list, ready to be positioned and scaled in the viewport. You can also add cameras to this list. When a camera is added, the bounds will be derived from the camera’s view frustum.

  • Operation: controls how multiple include bounds volumes are combined.

Intersect: sparse cubes must fall inside the intersection of all include bounds volumes to be permitted. Use this when you want to strictly confine the simulation to the overlap between multiple regions.

Merge: sparse cubes may fall inside any of the include bounds volumes to be permitted. This is equivalent to a union of all include bound shapes.

Static Include Bounds
  • Enable static include bounds: when enabled, a manually-defined world-space axis-aligned box will be added to the include bounds, without requiring a scene object.

  • X/Y/Z: the minimum and maximum world-space extents of the static include bounds along each axis.

  • Show static bounds: when enabled, the static include bounds box will be drawn in the viewport.

  • Show during preview: when enabled, the static include bounds box will remain visible during tyPreview playback.

Exclude Bounds

  • Exclude bounds list: the list of tyIcon box objects or camera objects whose volumes define regions where sparse cube expansion is explicitly prevented, regardless of include bounds.

  • Create new: creates and adds a new tyIcon box object to the exclude bounds list.

Static Exclude Bounds
  • Enable static exclude bounds: when enabled, a manually-defined world-space axis-aligned box will be added to the exclude bounds, without requiring a scene object.

  • X/Y/Z: the minimum and maximum world-space extents of the static exclude bounds along each axis.

  • Show static bounds: when enabled, the static exclude bounds box will be drawn in the viewport.

  • Show during preview: when enabled, the static exclude bounds box will remain visible during tyPreview playback.

Affect Mode

  • Affect mode: controls the overlap condition used when evaluating whether a sparse cube group falls inside or outside a bounds volume.

Encapsulate: a sparse cube group must be fully enclosed by the bounds volume to satisfy the condition.

Overlap: a sparse cube group only needs to partially overlap the bounds volume to satisfy the condition.

Camera Frustums

  • Expand: the number of degrees by which camera frustum bounds will be expanded outward on all sides. Use this to add a margin around the visible frame, preventing fluid from being culled too aggressively near the edges of the camera’s field of view.
